St Petersburg, April 12 (BNA) -- German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder was Saturday awarded an honorary doctorate from a university in St Petersburg where Russian President Vladimir Putin once studied.
Schroeder was honoured for his policy of detente in international politics.
"I have taken the honour as an incentive to further improve the relationship between Germany and Russia," said Schroeder.
Putin said the honouring of Schroeder was a "useful foundation stone in Russia's relationship with a unified Europe".
Schroeder, Putin and French President Jacques Chirac wanted to conclude their two-day summit with a discussion on international law and international security. Friday evening, the three had insisted on a leading role for the United Nations in the post war reconstruction of Iraq
