Manama, July 10 (BNA) Mina Salman may soon be transformed into a tourist port once all facilities within its boundaries are transferred to Khalifa bin Salman Port in Hidd which will be completed in 2006, reported today the 'Bahrain Tribune'.
Several steps are being considered to make use of the area to support economic and tourism activities, the sources said.
The Economic Development Board is also studying ways of transforming the port into one that receives tourist vessels with the construction of restaurants, recreational areas and cafes in the two km area.
The area could be converted into an attractive tourist site, especially since it is easily accessible, the sources said.
The Duty Free outlet opened in the port a year ago is also considering upgrading its facilities to suit the upcoming projects.
The focus on developing the port is all the more significant with the start of the countdown for the opening of the Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman bridge that the Ministry of Works and Housing is executing at a cost of BD38 million.
The bridge runs across Mina Salman facilities and work has begun to demolish its gate to replace it with an inter- section.
A new gate will be constructed along road 42 which is 300 metres away from the present gate.
The gate which is being demolished was built in 1994 at a cost of BD500,000.
