Manama–June7 (BNA) Details of talks held in Geneva on June 3 between a delegation representing Bahrain’s Government and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay were released. Social Development Minister and Acting Health Minister Dr. Fatima Al-Balooshi led the delegation.
“The two sides discussed the recent deplorable unrest which gripped the Kingdom of Bahrain”, the Social Development Ministry said in statement issued tonight. The ministry pointed out that the principle of transparency ranked high during the talks. It affirmed that the UNHCHR top official had shown understanding for the key points outlined by the Bahraini side. The statement quoted Navi Pillay saying that “the role of the UNHCHR is to cooperate with the Kingdom of Bahrain to ensure the veracity of the information which reaches their Geneva-based office”. The two sides agreed on a UNHCHR delegation’s visit to Bahrain to cooperate, assess and get updated on all issues in total transparency. The date and terms of visit have yet to be set in coordination with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay’s office. The ministry reaffirmed Bahrain’s keenness to welcome such visits out of firm belief in the principle of transparency regarding all measures undertaken as part of its internal and foreign policies. It also reiterated Bahrain’s respect for the role of the UNHCHR in promoting human rights, describing the forthcoming visit as an opportunity to reveal the true narrative of the unrest which gripped Bahrain.
