Arab League Chief Praises HM King Hamad’s Pioneering and Constructive Reforms

Manama, Jan. 15. (BNA) – The Secretary-General of the Arab League Dr. Nabil Al Arabi today praised the stept and landmark decisions taken by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa for the sake of carrying on the reform mark and consolidating stability in the kingdom.
Speaking during a press conference, held at the Foreign Ministry’s premises, with the Foreign Affairs Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, Dr. Al Arabi lauded HM King Hamad’s initiative to establish an “Arab Human Rights Tribunal”, which, he asserted, reflects the kingdom’s civilisational, intellectual, legal and political development.

The Arab League Chief also described HM the King’s decision to set up an independent fact-finding commission (the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry (BICI)) to inquire into the events of February and March, 2011, as “original, bold and unprecedented in the Arab world” given the international eminent experts, whose impartiality and transparency has been widely acknowledged worldwide, hailing the kingdom’s acceptance of the recommendations featuring in BICI’s final report whole-heartedly, and pledge to implement them.

Dr. Al Arabi also expressed the Arab League’s appreciation of HM the King’s sound and constructive ways in dealing with last year’s incidents, asserting that the establishment of a fact-finding commission and implementation of its recommendations are the best ways to address the crisis in Bahrain and should be applied to solve similar ones in the region.

The Arab Secretary-General also said that the Foreign Minister updated him on the measures and steps taken so far by the kingdom to address the repercussions of last year’s events, what has been implemented so far regarding BICI recommendations and the keynote speech delivered by HM King Hamad this morning.

On his part, The foreign Minister said that he briefed Dr. Al Arabi on the landmark decisions taken by HM King Hamad on his address to the nation today, adding that the Arab League Chief will hold talks and meetings with the political leadership.

He also said that he discussed with Dr. Al Arabi HM King Hamad’s pioneering intiative to establish and Arab Human Rights Tribunal, noting that Bahrain will submit an official memo in this regard during the Arab League’s meeting next March.
