Manama, Dec. 19. (BNA) – Secretary-General of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) Dr. Ahmed Abdulla Farhan received here today a delegation from the European Parliament (EU), led by Inese Vaidere and including Richard Hoyt, Ana Gomes, Silvia-Adriana Ticau, Nicole Sinclaire and the Non-Resident Ambassador of the European Commission Adam Kolach, currently on a visit to the kingdom at the invitation of the representatives Council.
Chairman of the Foreign Affairs, Defence and National Security at the Representatives Council MP Abdulrahman Bu Mjid, as well as NIHR's Director of Legal Affairs Yasser Ghanen Shaheen and Chief Administrator Nawaf Hassan were also present.
During the meeting NIHR's role in promoting and protecting human rights through setting up the needed mechanisms and strengthening national competences, were highlighted.
The on-going cooperation between the NIHR and the Executive branch and the human rights follow-up mechanisms adopted in line with the Paris principles regulating the work of National Human Rights Institutions, as confirmed by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa in his keynote address to the world marking the Human Rights day, were also reviewed.
The meeting also touched upon the progress of the implementation process of the recommendations of the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry (BICI) so far, as well as ways of enhancing cooperation between the two sides, especially the European Parliament's technical support for the NIHR in order to help achieve its goals.
