Washington, Feb.6 (BNA) - US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta and his Egyptian counterpart Gen. Abd-al-Fattah Al-Sisi have confirmed their support for cooperative relations between the two countries in the field of defense.
Panetta stressed the US commitment to the defense relations between the two countries. The two ministers also discussed the importance of continued security assistance for Egypt to achieve shared security objectives in the light of their equipment and capabilities. This came during a telephone call made last night by Panetta to Al-Sisi, according to spokesman of the US Department of Defense (Pentagon) George Little. Panetta commended Al-Sisi for his efforts to address shared security objectives, including Sinai and border security, the spokesman said. For his part, Al-Sisi restated the Egyptian Armed Forces' commitment to the Peace Treaty with Israel, and stressed his commitment that the Sinai will not be used as a base to threaten Israel. He also expressed thanks to Panetta for his leadership and support. The spokesman noted that the telephone conversation between the two sides dealt with the latest developments of the political situation in Egypt and the role of the Egyptian Armed Forces during the recent protests.
