01 : 56 PM - 17/02/2013

Manama: Feb. 17 –- (BNA)-- The Minister of Interior, H.E. Lt-General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, addressed a televised speech to citizens regarding the recent escalation of street violence targeting police men as well as public and private properties. Below is a translation of the text of the Minister of Interior's speech which had been aired on Bahrain TV last night:-

(( In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent the Most Merciful

Dear brothers: Over the past few days, Bahrain has witnessed an escalation in violence against police and the State. This has resulted in the death of two people and injuring of two others as well as 75 police officers, and considerable damage to public as well as private property. This is a sad day for the nation as we see members of our own community trying to undermine the nation’s stability.
The dramatic change in the range of weapons used includes rebar spears, Molotov cocktail bombs, and live ammunition against police. Moreover, 19 suspicious objects have been discovered across the country, including a 2-kg bomb that was defused by the competent authorities at the King Fahd Causeway.

The Ministry of Interior would like to take this opportunity to thank all good citizens of Bahrain for their patience and perseverance through these difficult days. They should take comfort in the fact that we are on the right path towards a better day through the recently re-launched National Consensus Dialogue and the reforms project that had been initiated by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. We will not be discouraged by the actions of those who are intent on undermining the stability and peaceful endeavors of Bahrain's government. Ours is a nation committed to reforms, human rights and the rule of law.

The progress of this nation requires a strong commitment from all citizens to avoid engaging in blame games and finger-pointing. The community plays an integral role in our efforts to identify a peaceful way forward. We must not be sidetracked by the naysayers and saboteurs. The solution to our problems requires us to come together rather than stand apart.

The National Dialogue is an opportunity to examine the issues facing this country and to work on these daunting issues through understanding, empathy and consensus.

Recent media reports have revealed the discovery of a Bahraini terrorist cell with links to Iran, Iraq and Lebanon. The Ministry of Interior confirms these reports and also confirms the arrest of eight Bahrainis on terror-related charges. These arrests were made with the cooperation of a fellow brotherly country. The eight had received training in weapons and explosives and also obtained funding from outside Bahrain. Further details will be released upon completion of the investigation.

The Ministry of Interior once again urges all Bahrain citizens to renounce violence and to refrain from taking part in criminal activities. The Public Security Force is committed to maintaining order in the face of any and all provocations or attacks. We seek the support of all good citizens of Bahrain and we continue to perform our security mission under the leadership of HM the King and with support from the government led by HRH the Prime Minister and the backing of HRH the Crown Prince we will prevail and survive these challenging times.))
