Six Suspects Receive One Year Prison Sentences over Misuse of Freedom of Expression

Manama, May 15. (BNA) -- Head of the Public Prosecution Nayef Youssef said that the Third Lower Criminal Court issued one year prison sentences against six suspects and confiscated the seized objects in five different cases related to the misuse of freedom of expression and defaming His Majesty the King on twitter.

He explained that as soon as the Public Prosecution was notified by the General Directorate of Economic and Electronic Security on the suspects'' indecent posts on twitter the Public Prosecution, it started investigating into the case by quizzing them and charged them of misusing

freedoms of expression and opinion publically and remanded them in custody ahead of their trial.

Head of the Public Prosecution asserted freedoms of opinion and expression are guaranteed by the constitution, law and international convention, but should not be used in a way that contradicts the norms and fundamentals of a democratic society.
