Rescued in East China Building Collapse
Beijing, June 20 (BNA) - About 200 rescuers working overnight have saved seven out of the 16 construction workers buried under rubble in an east China city after a building they were renovating collapsed, local authorities said Monday. The latest survivor was found Monday morning, local officials said adding that the rescue faces huge difficulties, according to China''s (Xinhua) News Agency. All the rescued have been taken to hospital. The accident occurred Sunday morning when a dilapidated four-story recreation center for seniors in the city of Wuxi, eastern Jiangsu Province, partially collapsed.

Medvedev Opposes Libya-Style Resolution on Syria
Moscow, June 20 (BNA) - Moscow will use its veto rights in the UN Security Council to prevent the adoption of a resolution on Syria similar to the one passed against Libya, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said. The United States, France and Germany have called on Russia to cooperate in preparing a resolution on Syria for a vote at the UN Security Council, according to Russian (RIA Novosti) News Agency. US Confirms Talks with Taliban
Washington, June 20 (BNA) - US Defense Secretary Robert Gates confirmed that US officials were involved in preliminary talks with Taliban to seek a political solution to the Afghan war but said he didn''t expect significant progress for months. Gates also said recent gains on the ground in Afghanistan meant US President Barack Obama would have "a lot of room for maneuver" when deciding how many troops to withdraw as he begins a limited US drawdown next month. Almost a decade into the Afghan conflict, the American public has grown increasingly war-weary and the killing of Osama bin Laden and other leading Al-Qaeda figures in recent months is fueling calls for a rapid pullout. Afghan President Hamid Karzai announced on Saturday that the United States was holding talks with the Taliban.

IAEA to Meet on Nuclear Safety Rules
Vienna, June 20 (BNA) - The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will start a meeting today aiming at improving nuclear safety as a result of the disaster at Japan''s Fukushima plant. The UN''s nuclear watchdog is scheduled to hold five days of talks involving officials from 150 countries on how to make nuclear power safer. The meeting will also discuss a report into the Fukushima nuclear emergency. But there are differences as to how much international action is needed to prevent future accidents. According to the (BBC) some states argue the details of safety regulation should be left to the governments concerned.

Seoul's nuke envoy to visit U.S. for revival of 6-party talks
Seoul, June. 19 (BNA) -- South Korea's chief nuclear envoy will visit the United States this week to discuss ways to resume multinational talks on North Korea's nuclear disarmament, Seoul's foreign ministry said Sunday. According to Yonhap news agency, during his six-day visit that begins on Tuesday, Wi Sung-lac is scheduled to meet three U.S. officials on North Korea -- Stephen Bosworth, special representative for North Korea policy; Kurt Campbell, Assistant Secretary of State; and Clifford Hart, new envoy for the six-party talks -- to have dialogue about North Korea's nuclear program and the long-dormant six-party negotiations, the ministry said.
