Japan earthquake, tsunami disaster could cost up to 235 billion dollars
Washington, March 21 (BNA) -- The World Bank has said in its latest East Asia and Pacific Economic Update report that the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan on March 11, could result in an economic loss of up to 235 billion dollars, or four per cent of its gross domestic product (GDP).

Tokyo, March 15 (BNA) -- Asian shares tumbled Tuesday as Tokyo’s stock benchmark plunged 10.6% on panic selling amid worries a possible Japanese nuclear catastrophe would further complicate and endanger the nation’s recovery from its worst-ever earthquake on record. The Nikkei Stock Average /quotes/comstock/64e!i:ni225 (JP:NI225 8,605, -1,015, -10.55%) finished 10.6% lower at 8,605.15 after sliding more than 14% earlier in the day, pressured by news of explosions at Tokyo Electric Power Co.’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant’s No. 2 and No. 4 reactors, on top of previous blasts at the No. 1 and No. 3 reactors.
