Manama, Oct. 2 (BNA) -- Two women candidates in Bahrain's run-off parliamentary race defeated male competitors on Saturday, becoming the first women in Bahrain history to win contested races for seats in parliament.
The two women -- Ibtisam Abdulrahman Hijris Ahmed and Sumaya Abdulrahman Ali Ebrahim AlJowder -- will give women four seats in the new parliament.
A third female candidate, Sawsan Hajy Ghaloom Takwy, was declared a victor two weeks ago after her competitors withdrew. |

Manama–Sept27(BNA) Parliament Chairman Khalifa bin Ahmed Al-Dhahrani today urged citizens to exercise their constitutional right and cast their votes in the second round of the by-elections, scheduled to be held on Saturday.
He stressed the importance of voting, describing the polls as a boost for the development, and democratic and reform momentum led by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa.
“Your votes in the parliament elections is crucial for national building efforts and the future of coming generations”, he said. |
