Manama, Jan. 9 (BNA):  Acting Head of the Psychiatry Department in the Arabian Gulf University (AGU) Dr. Haifa Al Gahtani was recently accredited as a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Consultant at the Cognitive Therapy Academy in Philadelphia, USA.

This accreditation makes Dr. Al Gahtani the first Saudi psychiatrist in the Middle East to obtain this certificate, which requires leadership and educational skills and supervision of behavioral therapists in addition to passing the accreditation’s requirements.

She is the first Saudi cognitive therapist approved by the Academy of Cognitive Therapy in the year 2008. She worked to raise awareness on the importance of non-drug psychological treatment interventions such as behavioral therapy, and established training programs for cognitive behavioral therapy in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.

Al Gahtani is currently working on developing a program for psychiatrists in the health and educational sectors, with the aim of refining therapeutic and advisory skills, basing on the principles of cognitive behavioral therapy.
