Vienna, Sept. 10 (BNA): A NATO Boeing C-17 aircraft "massively" violated Austrian airspace on Friday according to the Ministry of Defence in Vienna, said dpa international.
The aircraft flew over the Attersee lake near Salzburg on Friday at an altitude of just 1,000 metres instead of the prescribed flight altitude of around 10,000 metres.
The aircraft had behaved "like somebody driving the wrong way down a motorway" and massively endangered aviation, a ministry spokesperson said.
Two Austrian Eurofighters escorted the transport plane out of Austrian airspace to neighbouring Hungary, where the C-17 fleet of the NATO military alliance is stationed.
Friday's incident was the most serious violation of Austrian airspace in the past 20 years, the spokesperson said.
