Berlin, Apr.20 (BNA): Lowly Cologne shocked RB Leipzig 2-1 to boost their survival hopes while the result also leaves Schalke in a must-win situation later Tuesday to avoid relegation and could allow Bayern Munich to clinch another Bundesliga title on the weekend.
Former Germany defender Jonas Hector headed Cologne ahead less than a minute into the second half, and got the second with a low shot on the hour, a minute after Amadou Haidara smashed Leipzig's equalizer.
Cologne, who ended a run of nine games without victory in the second game under new coach friedhelm Funkel, remain second-last but are now tied on points with Hertha Berlin the relegation play-off.
The result means that bottom side Schalke, 13 points back, will be relegated a fourth time if they don't win at Arminia Bielefeld who are one point above the danger zone, said dpa.
Leaders Bayern are also in action in the later kick-offs and would go 10 points clear of Leipzig if they beat Bayer Leverkusen. If they do so they can clinch a record-extending ninth straight title with tthree games to spare on Saturday against lowly Mainz.
Leipzig's title hopes ended within a few days as they were held 0-0 by Hoffenheim on Friday before the surprise loss in Cologne with another modest performance and little danger up front.
Four more games are set for Wednesday while Hertha's match against Freiburg is one of three games they have seen postponed owing to a two-week team quarantine after several positive coronavirus tests.
