Deputy King ratifies, issues law amending Insurance against Unemployment decree-law

Manama, Apr. 24 (BNA): The Deputy King, His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, ratified and issued Law 4/2019 on amending some provisions of Decree-Law 78/2006 on Insurance against Unemployment.

The law had already been approved by the Shura and Representatives Councils.

According to Law 4/2019, surplus in the Insurance against Unemployment account shall be transferred to its general reserve, and shall not be disposed of except by a decision of the Cabinet, and based on the recommendation of the relevant minister and the approval of the board of directors.

The surplus shall be used for increasing the minimum and/or maximum unemployment benefits or to finance the Voluntary Retirement Scheme.

The law also stipulates that the insured beneficiary shall receive a compensation equaling 60% of the average salary they used to get during the twelve months before their unemployment. The compensation shall not exceed BD 1000 or be less than BD 200.

The law also stipulates that a monthly BD 200 compensation shall be paid for the unemployed with university qualifications, and BD 150 for others.

Beneficiaries receive compensations for a maximum of nine consecutive or intermittent months every 24 months starting from the date of the first payment. 

The Prime Minister –and ministers each in their capacity, shall implement the provisions of this law which takes effect one day after its publication in the Official Gazette.
