Manama, Apr.8 (BNA): Seventy-three inmates who served half imprisonment sentences had their remaining jailed terms commuted into alternatives penalties, said Assistant Attorney-General Chancellor Wael Boualley.
The move was based on the directives which were issued by Attorney General Dr. Ali bin Fadhl Al Bouainain to strengthen penal justice procedures and to modernise the judicial work system.
The Public Prosecution coordinated the move with the Verdict Execution Directorate at the Interior Ministry to set lists of eligible inmates.
The verdict execution judge issued a ruling commuting the remaining jail terms of 73 eligible inmates into alternative penalties, taking into consideration social, economic and security aspects
This brings the overall number of inmates who have benefited from the alternative penalty procedure to 3297 convicts so far, said Chancellor Boualley.
He pointed out that a timetable was drawn up to expand the implementation of the Alternative Penal Code to identify, through legal objective criteria, the eligible convicts who meet the terms.
The move is also in line with the royal directives to expand the scope of implementing the Alternative Penal Code, taking into account the convicts’ personal, family and humanitarian conditions.
“The Public Prosecution considers the alternative penalties as a crucial step to gradually rehabilitate convicts and help their integration into society, by restoring their confidence in their ability to employ their energies in a constructive way”, said Chancellor Boualley.
