Manama, Apr.5 (BNA): Bahrain Journalists Association (BJA) President Ahdeya Ahmed Al Sayyed expressed thanks to His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, hailing his directives to enact a new enlightened and modern media law.

She paid tribute to His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, for following-up on efforts to establish a modern media law.

She stressed the imporyance of upgrading legislations relating the press and media, particularly a law that regulates the electronic media.

In a statement to Bahrain News Agency (BNA), she commended the Government’s approval, during its weekly session chaired by HRH the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, of the amended law on the press, publishing, issued by law decree (47) of 2002.

“A developed media in any country is considered one of the criteria on the basis of which the progress of countries is determined”, she said, stressing the importance of keeping abreast of global changes that are taking place at all levels, including the media field.

This crucial step, she said, has been taken a month before World Press Freedom Day and the Bahraini Press Day, describing both annual events as an opportunity to reaffirm the role of the fourth estate locally and internationally.

Al-Sayed said that there are no journalists imprisoned in publishing cases or issues related to their profession, which, she said, evidence of freedom of the press in Bahrain,

“The press law will be one of the advanced legislations and add to the Kingdom’s legislative achievements”, she said, reaffirming commitment to credibility and responsibility in transmitting information and news in a way that supports development paths and prevents chaos.
